Coffee has been an integral part of our daily lives to keep us energized throughout the day. It’s hard to even start a day without such a beverage. There are even different ways to brew it or other elements to add to it to make it taste different.

Some folks like adding various ingredients like chocolate, cream, etc., to make their coffee taste better. Other people like brewing it differently to match their tastes.

But can you brew coffee twice? Yes, you can.

Some people prefer double brew coffee because the taste might be a bit different than regular single brew coffee. It usually tastes stronger. We will get to understand what double brew coffee really is and how ”it’s made.

Methods To Brewing Coffee Twice

There are some important things to consider in the process of rebrewing coffee grounds. Some different methods, along with their steps, are given below:

Method 1: Change The Ratio Of Coffee And Water While Brewing It Once

In this method, you do not necessarily need to brew the coffee two times. To still manage to get double brewed coffee, you need to change the recipe a bit. The ratio of water and coffee needs to be changed from the usual ratio you are supposed to use.

Now you need to double the ratio of coffee to water. The steps for this method are below:

1. Boiling The Water

Since you need more intense power of extraction, the water you boil needs to be over 200 degrees Fahrenheit. This way, the heat of the water can extract more of the flavor out of the ground coffee beans.

2. Adding The Ground Coffee

In general, for every 6 ounces of boiling hot water, you would naturally add in about one or two tablespoons of coffee grounds. That is what you would do for a once brewed or single brew coffee.

But since we are talking about double brew coffee, you need to double that amount. So, now you will add two to four tablespoons of coffee grounds for every 6 ounces of water. Dump these tablespoons of coffee grounds into your coffee mug.

3. Adding in The Boiling Hot Water

Now that the measurement of the coffee grounds is made, you can now pour the piping hot water into the coffee mug. Stir and let the hot water extract the flavor out of the coffee grounds.

4. Using a Coffee Maker

You can also use a coffee maker for this. In that case, you would be dumping the coffee grounds in your coffee maker and then pouring 6 ounces of water in, and then turning your coffee maker on.

This should take about 4 minutes to extract and provide you a good grind of coffee. Although the lesser time is taken for extraction, the better the coffee grind will be.

5. Adding Extra Flavors

Into the perfectly brewed coffee, if you want to add extra flavors to sweeten it, you will need to make sure you maintain the temperature of the coffee. Adding room temperature milk or sweetener will make the coffee go cold.

So, you need to make sure the milk you add is hot liquid milk that you heated up on a stove. Make that milk also reaches 200 degrees Fahrenheit to match the coffee’s temperature.

Method 2: Use The Usual Ratio Of Coffee And Water While Brewing It Twice

In this method, you need to brew the coffee two times. But here, to get a double brewed coffee, you can still use the usual ratio of coffee to water that you would have used for a single brewed coffee. The steps for this method are below:

1. Boiling The Water

Just like in the first method above, you need intense power of extraction. So, the water you are boiling has to be at least 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Adding The Ground Coffee

As we know, for single brewed coffee, in every 6 ounces of boiling hot water, you would add in about one or two tablespoons of coffee grounds.

We will not be changing the ratio of coffee to water in this method. It will remain one or two spoons of coffee grounds for every 6 ounces of water. Dump these few tablespoons of coffee grounds into your coffee mug.

3. Adding in The Boiling Hot Water

This step will not be any different than the one in the first method. You just have to pour the piping hot water into the coffee mug. Now start stirring the hot water and coffee grounds so that it extracts the flavor out.

You can use a coffee maker too if you want. Make sure to follow the same technique shown in the first method of brewing the coffee in the machine.

4. Preparations in Advance

A good tip to avoid wasting time to get your morning coffee would be to make preparations for your second brewing of coffee while the first brewing is running.

5. Checking The Temperature of The Already Brewed Coffee

If you ever mix up boiling hot water with coffee grounds that are at room temperature, then the beverage’s temperature might fall to 190 degrees Fahrenheit or less. Not to mention, when coffee is brewing, the temperature does indeed drop.

6. Reheating The Coffee

Since the temperature of the coffee has now dropped considerably, you should reheat it on your stovetop. For this, you should pour the already brewed coffee into a clean pot that is meant for boiling water on a stove.

7. Cleaning The Coffee Maker

Since you have poured the coffee into another pot, you can wash out the coffee maker’s container and put it back with the machine. We will be starting the brewing process all over again now.

8. Adding The Same Coffee Grounds Again

Add another one or two tablespoons of coffee grounds into the coffee maker.

9. Adding in The First Batch of Coffee

Now instead of adding the 6 ounces of boiling hot water to the coffee grounds in the coffee maker, you will instead be pouring in the reheated coffee that you brewed earlier.

Hopefully, it has reached 200 degrees Fahrenheit by then. Let the coffee maker run for about one to four minutes so that you get a fine grind of double brewed coffee.

 10. Second Brewing Without The Coffee Maker

Just like in the first method where we talked about stirring the coffee grounds, we can do this for the double brewing method too. Once the first brew of coffee is made and is being reheated on the stove to stay hot, you just have to pour in the second batch of 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds into your coffee mug.

And right into that mug, you will be pouring in your boiling hot first brew of coffee after taking it off the stove. Then stir the mixture with your spoon to make sure the agitation from all the movement helps with extracting flavor from the fresh coffee grounds.

11. Adding Extra Flavors

Of course, like in the previous method, you can also add milk or sugar into your mug. But do not forget that your milk also has to be very hot when you are about to pour it into your double brew coffee.

Lots of people are not very familiar or might not know what double brewed coffee is. The concept of using coffee grounds twice seems unconventional for people who are only used to making coffee through one brewing.

You can go ahead and increase the brews all you want for a much stronger coffee. However, it is not recommended due to high levels of caffeine being injurious to health.
